Baby Name Regret

This is a more complex issue and should be treated as such.

Baby Name Regret?

It happens more often than you think. You are not alone. While I can offer perspective on the name itself, it's important to understand the nature of these feelings.

Important Disclaimer

I am a baby name consultant, not a licensed therapist. Name regret is often tied to postpartum anxiety, depression, or identity shifts. If your feelings about the name are causing significant distress, affecting your bond with your baby, or impacting your daily life, please seek support from a mental health professional.

Free Advice by Age Group

1Newborn to 6 Months

It is completely normal to question everything at first. Give yourself grace, and focus on bonding with your baby rather than their label. Unless the name has a truly negative association you cannot shake, wait it out. Hormones are wild right now.

26 to 18 Months

If you find yourself not wanting to say or share your child's name and the negative feelings persist, consider trying out a few different options. Take a full day or week and commit to the new name. You don't want to go through the process of a name change if you aren't one hundred percent certain. At this age, babies are responsive but adaptable. This is the "speak now or forever hold your peace" window.

318 Months and Older

Your child likely identifies with their name now. Changing it becomes a family discussion involving them as well.. Focus on the positive attributes of the name or create a special family nickname. Often, the regret at this stage is more about the parent's perception of others' opinions than the name itself.
